Epigenetics Research Project

Abstract

Epigenetics is only recently being discovered. As scientists know more about how genes are altered due to external stimuli, the more important it is to understand what can cause our genes harm. Our research project has to do with epigenetic effects of nutrition. We are tested the hereditary effect that nutrition has on fruit flies. The plan was to have three groups of flies and feed them different ratios of nutrients. We have behavioral based tests on top of the initial genetic differences. These include gestation, immobility, and mortality rate.

Project Goals and Outcomes

Goals

For my EDGE, I completed an epigenetics research project for Dr. Mauger, the genetics professor here at SUU. We underwent hereditary research on nutritional composition for fruit flies, and presented our findings at the festival of excellence.

Objectives

We presented our research in the festival of excellence. The project helped me to improve my leadership skills by teaching me perseverance, working with a team, handling uncertainty, and more.

Proof of completion: Because of this research, I changed career paths to something that puts me in a permanent position of leadership. I want to be an entrepreneur. I attribute my change of heart to the research that helped me understand my passions.

Project Deliverables

I provided a research poster that we presented in the festival of excellence. I included pictures of myself in the process of doing the project. A daily journal was taken and will be included.
