New research in Epigenetics field could lead to helpful advances in cultivation of Drosophila Melanagaster.

Drosophila Melanagaster are an extremely common test subject for hereditary research. They reproduce quickly and are easy to take care of. New research was conducted to find out about the ideal nutritional composition of cultivating these useful test subjects.

The experiment was conducted using different ratios of nutrients including carbohydrates and proteins. Research in the past agrees that an increase in protein prevents longevity and reproduction rates. The experiment concluded that there was not enough statistical evidence to support the hypothesis that small differences in protein to carb ratios make a difference to the lifestyle of these flies. Dakota one of the lead researchers said "After several generations of raising these flies the differences in the generations was insufficient to provide any real evidence that these past experiments have any merit".

The researchers would like to conduct future experimentation on the DNA level of the longevity of the flies. Using tools such as DNA methylation and acetylation kits, the researchers would be able to see differences on the DNA level. Future research will be postponed until enough support can be generated from the community to provide funding for such a goal.
